Scorecard:

Sri Lanka: 158 for 5 (20 overs)

(Dilshan 48 off 37 balls, Jayawardene 41* off 29 balls, Sangkarra 35 off 35 balls, Vettori 2 for 32)

New Zealand: 110 all out (17 overs)

(Guptill 43 off 34 balls, Redmond 23 off 13 balls, Mendis 3 for 9, Udana 2 for 17)

Sri Lanka scored at a steady clip and held on to their wickets long enough to post a score above 150. With 3 of their batsmen getting above 30 it was easy work for Sri Lanka and none of the New Zealand bowlers could impress the Sri Lanka batsmen enough to deny them some runs. Jayawardene forced the pace just enough towards the end to get to a decent target. There were no grand pyrotechnics.

New Zealand didn’t have a dream start but were soon coasting along merrily at 64 for 2 in 8 overs. This was a place they could launch their attack. However, Mendis was called in and he reduced them to 66 for 4 in just 4 balls. Hereafter it was all downhill for New Zealand right upto the Flight they would catch back home.

Scorecard:

England: 161 for 6 (20 overs)

(Bopara 55 off 47 balls, Pietersen 31 off 19 balls, Bravo 2 for 30)

West Indies: 82 for 5 (8.2 overs)

(Sarwan 19 off 9 balls, Bravo 18 off 13 balls, Chanderpaul 17 off 10 balls, Swann, Andersen, Sidebottom, Broad and Rashid took a wicket each)

Pietersen and Bopara again got England to a stage where they could launch an attack and make a good score. West Indies did come back in at time to clip the run rate and somehow managed to not let them run away with the score. With rain predicted, it was going to be Duckworth Lewis and a shortened T20 is usually easy meat for the second team. Even today, West Indies were presented with a target of getting 80 of 9 overs. Pretty comfortable?

England tore into their batting and got them to 3 for 16 off 2.1 overs. But than was it, the number of overs were too less to get the team out, and West Indies just needed one pair of batsmen to get them there. And they got there in styel with 4 balls to spare. Hard Luck England!
