Is Duckworth worth in T20?

Well England after scoring 191 looked foolish with West Indies chasing a modest 60 off 6 overs. Fine they were 30 of 2.2 overs when rain first intervened. But a match a few hours ago being decided on Duckworth meant that West Indies could go crazy in their chase right from the word go! This is not to take credit away from West Indians since Chris Gayle did play a marvellous innings.

England batted well all round to get to the total of 191 especially down the order when Morgan and Wright got 95 off 9.2 overs and then Wright got another 8 off the last 4 balls to finish in style.

Sammy again bowled very well and got West Indies into the next round. Not much to talk about the West Indies innings here. They went off the block very fast knowing very well that one Mr. Duckworth and his friend Lewis were going to help them today. This was Chris Gayle kind of setting. He went ballistic with his shots and they were way ahead when rain intervened for the first time at 30/0 (2.2 overs). They were left to make just 30 off 3.4 overs which was now kids play.

Scorecard:

Sri Lanka: 173 for 7 (20 overs)

(Jayawardene 100 off 64 balls, Perera 23 off 19 balls,  Price 2 for 31, Lamb 2 for 34)

Zimbabwe: 29 for 1 (5 overs)

(Taibu 12* off 13 balls, Taylor 11* off 11 balls)

Sri Lanka was under pressure in this match having lost to New Zealand in their opener. From being favorites to win the Cup, they were now with their back to the wall. Is Zimbabwe still a force to reckon? or are they relegated to adorn the dustbin of International Cricket?

Mahela Jayawardene was the umpteenth batsman to carry his IPL form to this Tournament. Says a lot about the “too much cricket” comment that failed batsmen try to pass off on us. It is surely an exercise in covering their skeleton cupboard with a string of rattlers. Jayawardene scored the second century of this World Cup and although you could recognize the batsman at the other end (given their short stays), still he paraded the bowlers till the completion of the 19 th over. Well Sri Lankans got just 7 runs in the last over., though Jayawardene had done his part.

Zimbabwe were never going to be in the fray. However, after the first over, the rain gods appeared and threw an opportunity at them. From scoring 174 in 20 overs, they were down to getting 106 in 11 over - surely a much easier task. But they didn’t even attempt!! If they’d have got 44 off the first 5 overrs, they’d have won! Now wasn’t that easy? Zimbabwe, when would you Flower again??
