2009
06.23

The Most Valuable Player of World Cup 2009 was as expected, Shahid Afridi. Though he bloomed late, in 7 matches, he scored 176 runs in 125 balls scoring at a strike rate of 140.8 at an average of 35.2. He scored 2 50s in the matches that mattered the most – the SemiFinals and Finals. He also took 3 catches He bowled 28 overs and took 11 wickets giving 149 runs at an average of 13.54 at a very miserly 5.32g RPO. Phew! Some performance!

He was followed by of course, Dilshan, who had a dream run with his bat! In 7 matches, he scored 317 runs in 219 balls scoring at a strike rate of 144.74 at an average of 52.83. He scored 3 50s in matches that mattered the most, except the final. He also took 3 catches.

Next were Kallis and Gayle both on the strength of their batting like Dilshan. In fact, this tournament was so one-sided for the Batsmen that there was only one allrounder in the Top 30 to get points on bowling front as well. There were of course a few bowlers on the list, but as low as 20th – Mendis, 21st Van der Merwe, 24th Razzaq, 25th Ojha, 28 Ajmal and 30th Umar Gul.  Rest all were batsmen!
